Appendix: Connection Settings Application
Case Manager applications make use of WS-Discovery technology to detect the Instance Directory on the local network. Information from the Instance Directory is subsequently used to connect to the correct instance (database). The detection only works for a single hop on the network: that is, if the Instance Directory is accessed through a VPN or a gateway on the network, it may not be able to detect it. Case Manager 6 includes a utility, Case Manager Connection Settings, that can be used to configure the behavior of a local workstation connecting to the Instance Directory.
Configuration
The settings to connect to the Instance Directory are stored in the current (Windows) user's registry. That is, if multiple Windows users make use of Case Manager applications on the single machine, this configuration will need to be done for each of the users. When opening the application, the current connection behavior is shown from where it may be configured. You can choose to make use of discovery to detect the Instance Directory on the local network by selecting the Automatically discover Instance Directory on the network check box. When this option is not selected, you are required to specify the network name/address of server running the Instance Directory.
The following actions are available on the toolbar:
Save
The Save button saves the changes made to the connection settings. This information is saved for the current user on the machine.
Refresh
The Refresh button reloads the information as saved, discarding all changes made since the last save.
Advanced Settings
Typically, the Instance Directory is always published on same (default) port number and web service path, requiring you to only specify the server name/address when not making use of discovery. In the very rare case where the Instance Directory is published on a different port or web service path, this information can be configured as well. The Advanced Settings button toggles the display of the Port Number and Service Path settings. Should it be necessary to explicitly specify these settings, you can uncheck the Use Default check box and specify the appropriate value.
Test Settings
The Connection Settings utility can be used to test the connection to the Instance Directory from the current workstation. Whether making use of discovery or explicitly specifying the server name/address (and, optionally, the port number and service address), the Test button will verify whether a connection to the Instance Directory can be established. When making use of discovery, this test will also ensure that only one Instance Directory is detected on the network, since multiple can result in unpredictable behavior.
While the test runs, the application shows a progress bar, and after completion, the result of the test is displayed to the user.
Help
The Help button on the toolbar opens this help article on Case Manager Learn in the user's default browser.
